Australia's Multicultural Flag

All races, All religions, All Australians
Australia's new Grey flag

The Flag of Freedom Australia is my gift to our future generations. It will enable us to claim harmony and create peace among all races within this country of racial diversity. It is our key to accepting our traumatic history of colonisation and our key to open the door to our future, a reconciled nation between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians.

The Flag of Freedom Australia consists of a black and white map of Australia on a contrasting background of which I ask one to visualise as being grey. Grey being a place where all colours fade, an area of non-judgment or categorisation. Standing under this grey banner we eliminate the colour of being black, white, red or yellow and the label of race or religion.

A multicultural flag for a multicultural country. The grey flag for reconciliation, multiculturalism and future republican symbol.

The story

My Calling to become the Ambassador for Reconciliation (Flag Man), began in the year-2000 following a dream of a Black and White Flag with a White and Black map of Australia in the centre. In July-2000, I left my home town of Bunbury and headed to Broome WA to commence the Flag of Freedom project. I had the image screen printed into a Flag and began to re-paint and restore the Freedom Bus ready for my campaign throughout Australia. I first paraded the Flag of Freedom and Freedom Bus to the public in the Shinju Matsuri Festival and had an overwhelming positive response towards this noble dream of reconciliation and multiculturalism.

Following the festival I announced to the media my intentions to parade this symbol of Reconciliation down the main street of every major City and Town possible Australia wide. My Mission Statement was to Unfurl this symbol down every main street to declare each place healed from it’s past unjustified actions delivered to innocent people of this land from the government of the time.

Declaring this symbol (Grey Banner) as Australia’s Healing Flag, marking the beginning of a Republic in this Country we call Australia.

Becoming One flag for One people, moving us forward as a Unified Nation between Indigenous and Non-Indiginous Australians.
Our Grey Sail to move us forward in time Creating Harmony from stern to bow.

Along my 10-year campaign throughout Australia, I visited many Aboriginal communities and learnt a great deal about Aboriginal culture and the importance to allow this 60,000-year old culture to remain and be maintained for another 60,000 years and beyond.

I received 100% support from Indigenous Australia and have a total of 33 Indigenous contemporary and traditional artworks adorning the Freedom Bus.

Renowned Artists, such as :
• Paddy Fordham Wainburranga (1930-2006).
• Jimmy Mawukura (Mulgra) Nerrimah (1924-2013).
• Janangoo Butcher Cheryl (1920-2009).
• Walka Molly Rogers (1930-2006).
• Douglas Kwarlpe Abbott.
• Michael Naden – Kuku Yalanji.
• Sally Mununggurr – Yolngu.
• Gambirra – Yolngu.
• Nellie Rankin.

After completion of my Unfurling Campaign, I flew to London for a meeting with the Head of Public affairs to hand in person my letter addressed to the Queens office, to request an audience with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England to present our Head of State this important message of Reconciliation and future Republic symbol of Australia.

I was denied an audience with our Late Head of State, Her Magesty Queen of England, however, I was commended for my efforts and commitment towards this noble Quest of Reconciliation and was asked to forward a copy of the Flag of Freedom Australia to the Queens office in due time.

After completion of my London campaign, I returned to Australia and replaced the engine in my 1969 Dodge Freedom Bus.

I drove from Bunbury WA to Humpty Doo Darwin NT, to meet with the designer of the Aboriginal flag. I met with Mr. Harold Thomas in order to get a full understanding of his design and story regarding the Aboriginal flag.

Mr. Thomas explained that the symbol he designed was for pride and unity for Aboriginal People and came to fruition from the struggles caused from the land rights issues at the time. It has become the most powerful symbol for Aboriginal people and Aboriginal culture in this country, encouraging identity and belonging, and transcending Aboriginal Art and Aboriginal Culture back into a vibrant dreamtime existence.

Mr. Thomas was extremely supportive towards my campaign and was impressed with the Flag of Freedoms meaning of Reconciliation and its ideology of being a grey sail, moving this country forward from its past.

Mr. Thomas gave me his full blessing to pursue this noble dream of Reconciliation and Future Republican movement.

Mr. Harold Thomas signed his artistic signature on the original Flag of Freedom to give 100% support on behalf of his Ancestors and Aboriginal Australia. (2007).

Combined with this Signature and the Freedom Bus being decorated with Dreamtime Aboriginal Art from Australia wide I am proud to be a part of this historic symbol that unifies this nation and Reconciles the past allowing Indigenous and Non-Indeginous to stand united as brothers and sisters striving for a better future together in the land down under.

"Our Future"

"One flag for one people"

"Our children are our future"

Wake Up Australia

In my conclusion
This world is a delusion therefore all aspects must be, though this dream for eternal peace is destined our reality.
For if peace exists then a natural state it must be, only beaten helpless by karma and conditioned by fools like we.
As my existence is fuelled by thought of desire, of an intelligence immeasurable equal water and fire.
Now manifested in form to experience sensation, and unfurl this grey sail throughout our nation.
A journey that has seen many moons go by, destined my inspiration till the day I die.
So many labels have dwelled upon me, yet nobody going nowhere is all one can be.
I am thy spirit show respect for thee, give thyself no label only liberty.
A revolutionary I may strive to be, to overthrow this government of immorality.
If this world was to make a martyr of me, my death would stand a righteous victory.
With peace at the forefront a leader I’d become, to ensure that our children will all live as one.
To lower these banners which keep us divided, and hoist this one symbol which embarks us united.
In my attempt to awaken the shaman of thee, to bring forth our generation triumphantly.
To encourage our Indigenous to laugh away their tears, and pray we colonists can dance away our fears.
For our history has left us forsaken and forlorn, faced divided with labels of colour and scorn.
A past which is haunted with sorrow and pain, in memory of countrymen who died in vain.
A witness to genocide I shall relinquish to be, as the divine sheds light upon humanity.
No longer to be fooled and led astray, by conquesting empires and evil games to play.
Thus ceasing this negative realm of creation, left standing proud in our dreamtime nation.
Reliant on electricity with fossil fuel to burn, soon time shall deliver our ultimate lesson to learn.
Our countrymen will be worth their weight in gold, for their knowledge holds the key for our story to be told.
So tell me Australia where would you be, without our full blood Aborigine?
So wake up Australia, it’s time we stand united, and fly this one flag of which I provided!
For the fate of our country lies in our hand, as she’s destined to become our one promised land.

Yours truly, the Flag Man
Simon Labriola, Ambassador for Reconciliation
